7/8/2023 0 Comments A strangeness in my mind![]() ![]() ![]() So when Pamuk, who has since won a most deserved Nobel Prize for Literature, releases a new novel I am always eager to read it. It was not comforting, but it helped frame my understanding of that conflict that 9/11 brought to our doorsteps. ![]() Unable to bear watching the images on constant repeat on the news, I tuned out the news and retreated to 1591 where the same forces of Islamic fundamentalist tradition waged violent resistance to creeping Westernization. While the book’s events took place hundreds of years ago, the conflict between tradition and modernity was the same conflict that brought us to that awful day. It was early September, 2001 and My Name is Red had just been released in the U.S. I was about half to two-thirds of the way through it on September 11th. If ever there were a book for its time, it was that one. I will never forget my first introduction to Orhan Pamuk. ![]() 7/8/2023 0 Comments Nobody's Hero by Bec McMaster![]() When dangerous secrets are revealed, and Luc realizes an old enemy is on his trail, he’s forced to change his plans. The city hall building is a black steel frame covered with black glass, like a great black mirror you have to pass it to get to the train station. Once, hoping to make myself more inconspicuous, I took to wearing a long black raincoat-but any hope I might have had was swept away when I walked by the new city hall complex on the broad avenue leading up to the station. I stand five feet eight inches tall, weigh two hundred and fifteen pounds, and have round shoulders and stumpy arms and legs. The narrator then goes on to advance the story in an intriguing way: The entire opening paragraph piques our curiosity, but especially the final sentence. My nickname trails after me like a shadow. Besides, I’d rather not run into anyone I know. It takes me the better part of an hour to drive there, but since my purchases include a lot of specialized items-faucet packing, spare blades for power tools, large laminated dry cells, that sort of thing-the local shops won’t do. Once a month I go shopping downtown, near the prefectural offices. ![]() 7/8/2023 0 Comments Echo tree henry dumas![]() ![]() ![]() In 1968, at the age of thirty-three, he was shot and killed by a New York City Transit Authority police officer. I thoroughly enjoyed Marcia Williams' version of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. They stories are all a great way to teach moral lessons. Each tale presents a lesson on morality and love. Chaucer records nine stories: The Knight's Tale, The Miller's Tale, The Reeve's Tale, The Wife of Bath's Tale, The Franklin's Tale, The Clerk's Tale, The Nun's Priest's Tale, The Pardoner's Tale, and the Summoner's Tale. Chaucer writes down the tales to pass on to the rest of the town. While traveling to Canterbury, some of the pilgrims take turns telling stories to help the 120 mile journey pass by quickly and to entertain fellow pilgrims.
